ARTISTS STATEMENT
I commenced painting in 1999, as a means to help me through a breaking down of the original ideas and narrative from my formative years and experiences. The turn of the century seemed to be an important time for transitioning.
Initially I explored with acrylics on board and canvas with mainly figurative work.My works in the last 10 years have used more mixed media with an oil paint bias.
The process of cracking open the tight seal, applying gentle pressure to the knurled cap, (an exquisite sensibility in itself). Squeezing a rich paste from a tube, escaping to be seen by the light of day . Process filled with a vibrancy of intense colour, or wholeness of earth like hues is a wondrous experience. In that moment the world is full of excitement and infinite possibility, with the touch, smell and aesthetic combining in an enchanted flux. Time appears to stand still.
Although most paintings could be described as abstract, I find a structure around shapes helps create a boundaried space to focus on edges and colour relationships.
My original studios were in South Kensington and the Old Gas Works in Fulham. In the last 10 years I moved to an environment closer to nature next to the river in Hurley Berkshire.
I have spent time painting in many studios learning with established painters in UK, Spain and France. Also time spent with Mandala artists in Bhutan
gave valuable insight to the rhythmic ,meditative approaches to pigment grinding and preparation.

I found particular inspiration and guidance from evenings spent with Rothko's Seagram Murals, Four Seasons Collection. As much from engaging with the resonance of the hallowed space as the visual impact of the individual works.
Time and space like this helps in extending the dreamworld into waking consciousness, extending the relationship between consciousness and the unconscious.
